This is post is a summary of what my comp readers, Professor Jumadinova and Professor Brand, and I talked about on September 17th and 18th, 2024.
September 17th
On Tuesday September 17th, Professor Brand and I had our individual meeting where we discussed a variety of things including more literature review resources and the choices I would have to make when creating my art piece. We also talked about themes in the work that are important to discuss on a higher level.
As for resources we talked about videographic depictions of the post-human and cyborg. Movies such as Metropolis, Ex Machina, M3gan, and Her are examples of how society is thinking about AI and the cyborg whether that be expressed through fear or excitement.
We also talked about a podcast called In Bed with the Right and the episode about pro-natalism. There is a societal pressure on women to reproduce and they discuss that. This ties back into my project because I am thinking a lot of the female body and the rights to a body. Post-humanism is also very tied together with feminism because of its argument against the Vitruvian man being the symbol for perfection and human achievement. Humanism sees the white male figure as ideal and post-humanism pushes against that.
My work will think about the societal pressure on women to have the “ideal” body and stray away from it. Female robots have in the past been represented in a very feminine way (see Ai-da for example). It will be interesting to think about how society’s opinion on the “ideal” will impact the opinions about the look of the cyborg. This converstation also leads into the idea of a “real” or “fake” women and how trans people are impacted by stereotypes and snap judgements. Women are being policed in many forms through expressions, body shaming, social media, and more. This piece will make a statement about these pressures put on women and the unfortable feelings that will occur because of this piece are only evidence of that.
Finally, we talked about how important every decision I will make for this piece are. Something as simple as the voice will have an impact on the meaning and outcome. Using my own voice means something different than using an online one. Or using a masculine sounding versus a feminine voice has its own implications. All these things need to be condisidered before making a final decision.
September 18th
On Wednesday, September 18th I met with my other reader Professor Jumadinova.
We talked about the presentation for demo day. We made some corrections to my slides including deleting some unneccessary ones and taking off some of the words. I also have to add a conclusion slide and fix some of the differentiators
I also have to email Professor Brand about inviting her to my demo day presentation.
When I am done with the slides I have to submit them as a pdf in my research notebooks in a docs folder.
For the next few days I will focus on making the eyes and coming up with a way to make them move.
I now have a repo to put my code in called Am-I-PCain02.
