Summary:

For this activity I made my slides for my demo day presentation that follow along with the outline from the previous activity.

Demo Day Outline:

Introduction Slides 1-3

Must-Make Points:

An art piece about AI’s relationship with humanity and a reflection on the nature of humanity versus AI.

The display will include 2 robotic sculptures that discuss humanity and its existance.

The piece will also explore posthumanism and what it means to be a human. Posthumanism came about in the end of the 19th century and since then has been strongly tied with feminist and ecological movements.

The sculpture itself will also inspire thought about the female body, the idea of the ideal body, the objectification of women, and what a cyborg is.

Using LLMs to generate text for discussion between the two sculptures about philosophy.

The sculptures will have changing expressions and motion to indicate emotion and reference the uncanny valley.

The sculpture will include both movement and auditory elements

Name of the project: Am.I.

Problem Summary Slides 4-5

According to a Pew Research Study 37% of Americans are more concerned about AI than excited. People fear job loss, privacy, and the idea AI will surpass human skills.

Art is a way to explore contemporary ethical issues and with AI at the center stage of many aspects of life (home, work, education) it is important to analyze the societal impacts it has. On the flip side, it is also important to ask how can we learn more about humanity through AI and define what it is human.

In conversation with pieces such as Conversations with Bina48 by Stephanie Dinkins but also focusing in on topics such as objectification of the female body and ideas surrounding posthumanism. The idea of two robots having a conversation with just themselves is also unique.

From as far as I know there has not been a piece about 2 physical AI robots talking about philosophy before. It works in conversation with other artists in a similar field to develop an understanding of humanity’s relationship to AI. It also creates a literal conversation in the gallery allowing the viewer to think in the moment their positions on the subject instead of needing a second human party to discuss.

Lead the the viewers to come to a personal conclusion about the definitions of humanity. Revisit what makes something man-made or real. The uncanny and posthumanism is often met with uncomfort. That is due to its push against traditional society.

Give the non-physical (AI) a physical body to challenge the audience on the 3-D plane. It may be easier to approach the subject if there is something physcial to attach too.

Revision the future of society in terms of the cyborg and even apply it to the context of our current reality. The idea of the cyborg stems from our connection with technology. For example, our phone as an attachment of ourselves.

Audience Slide 6

Open to the public - a belief in accessibility to art

Wide Spectrum - accessible through sound and visual elements

Technophobes - Discussion would be particularly interesting with people opposed to technological advancements and its impacts on society. The goal is not to “convince” them but more think about turning that fear into something more productive such as philosophical discussion

Expertise Slide 7

Passed the AI and Robotics classes

I have been working for almost 2 years now with Professor Jumadinova on Underwater Robotics and related projects. I have also aided and taught numerous times in robotics and STEM outreach programs for younger students with an interest in technology. Prior to college I spent 3 years at the Crawford County Career and Technical Center training in Electronics Technology giving me a large amount of knowlege in the field. I also got the highest NOCTI (Standarized Industry test) score for electronics technology in CCCTC history. I have been an artist for as long as I can remember with a particular interest in digital media and technology.

I am really hoping to improve my knowledge of 3-D printing and making a new type of robot. I also like to integreate AI with Robotics

My future goal is to continue to work somewhere in the field of robotics and somewhere were I can develop my ideas creatively would be ideal

Creates a physical piece for my portfolio and gallery event for my resume to reference to. Shows my interest in both CS and Art for a potential employer.

Conclusion: Am.I. is an Art piece about AI’s relationship with humanity that will: - Use AI and robotics - Confront fear around tech - Have auditory and visual elements - Be in conversation with other posthumanism works - Create philosophical discussion around technology and society
