Summary:
For my demo day presentation I hope to present my ideas on the impact of AI on society and how the art will develop these ideas as well as prove that I am capable of finishing the piece itself.
The story of my demo day will be about providing background information on the idea of the post-human and how this piece fits into that narrative. The idea is to create an experience for the viewers to reflect on their relationship with AI and what defines humanity. Giving AI a physical form, like the goal of this project, works to aid the viewer in having that conversation about thier thoughts on technology overall. The presentation will also touch base on my biography to give insight on how I will be able to accomplish this project.
Demo Day Outline:
Introduction
Name of the project: Am.I.
Description: An art piece about AI’s relationship with humanity and a reflection on the nature of humanity versus AI.
Well Defined Value/Problem: Technology is rapidly developing and humanity needs to look at its relationship with said technology and evaluate its impact on our society and values. The fear of AI is currently setting us in a direction that could be self destructive. This piece hopes to take that fear and move it towards curoisity and reflection.
Evidence that provides scale or support: Display relevent and recent laws surrounding AI. Also display how the idea of the post-human emerged.
Problem Summary
Biggest issue to solve: Fear and lack of awareness surrounding AI
Evidence: Display statistics on people’s opinions on AI overtime
Impact: Talk about how art can be for the development of ideas and can be used to work towards understanding philosophical concepts such as existance and humanity.
Factors that differentiate: From as far as I know there has not been a piece about 2 physical AI robots talking about philosophy before. It works in conversation with other artists in a similar field to develop an understanding of humanity’s relationship to AI. It also creates a literal conversation in the gallery allowing the viewer to think in the moment their positions on the subject instead of needing a second human party to discuss.
Audience
Museams and Galleries are meant to be open to the public so this is meant for anyone who will listen. My real hope is to get to the people who have not really thought about AI before and spark that dialogue for them with this piece. The hope is to get a wide spectrum of viewers, those who currently understand technology and those who do not regardless of any other demographic.
Expertise
- Coursework: Passed the AI and Robotics classes
- Involvement: I have been working for almost 2 years now with Professor Jumadinova on Underwater Robotics and related projects. I have also aided and taught numerous times in robotics and STEM outreach programs for younger students with an interest in technology. Prior to college I spent 3 years at the Crawford County Career and Technical Center training in Electronics Technology giving me a large amount of knowlege in the field. I also got the highest NOCTI (Standarized Industry test) score for electronics technology in CCCTC history. I have been an artist for as long as I can remember with a particular interest in digital media and technology.
- Curiosity: I am really hoping to improve my knowledge of 3-D printing and making a new type of robot.
- Intent: My future goal is to continue to work somewhere in the field of robotics and somewhere were I can develop my ideas creatively would be ideal
- Non-academic goal: Creates a physical piece for my portfolio and gallery event for my resume to reference to. Shows my interest in both CS and Art for a potential employer.
