This is the 12th post in a my progress blog in week 13 of class. We are completing activity 11 from the course slide deck. Welcome!

General strategies I’ve used for finding work and literature have been searching for modernly written articles on Google Scholar. I then weed out the ones that I can’t access through my Allegheny account. Then I read the abstracts to see if they relate to my topic. I then will print out the article and read it and take notes on it. Then I find the citation and write down the best quotes in a google doc where I also note all the sources I find.

Chinese Characters: Handwriting → Text

When I started looking at literature I started looking into articles that had to do with reading chinese characters on a paper into text online. This is a very developed are in english languages and many other languages; however, because chinese isn’t based on an alphabet this makes it harder to read and translate writing into paper. The technology to do this uses different methods of breaking down characters and recognizing patterns.

Recent tools and technology:

I have also been reading articles about different language learning tools like Duolingo and Skritter and other flashcard applications. These are some of the more modern technologies in the field that I am considering. I am planning to compare and contrast different products to show where state of the art is and where my idea came from for multilayered flashcards.

Learning a second language

I have spent most of my reading time looking into different strategies in teaching chinese. These have also considered classroom learning and individual learning and how teaching a language works in both areas.
